ROB'S STORY

Rob McClanahan, a former professional American ice hockey player, is best known for his key contribution to the 1980 U.S. Olympic “Miracle on Ice” team. With five goals and three assists, he helped fuel the United States’ in their stunning upset of the heavily favored Soviet Union, and later securing the Gold Medal against Finland- with a game winning goal from McClanahan. Growing up in St. Paul, Minnesota, he began skating at just four years old with his siblings and the entire neighborhood on the outdoor pond outside their house. Throughout his youth, McClanahan also participated in tennis, skiing, soccer, and baseball. Continuing on as a multi-sport athlete at Mounds View High School, with 40 goals and 26 assists in 28 games his senior year of hockey, he committed to the University of Minnesota that spring in 1976. Under Herb Brooks' lead in college, McClanahan established himself as one of the nation’s top collegiate forwards and helped lead the program to a National Championship in 1979. Following that season, he went to Olympic Tryouts in the last week of July of 1979- marking only the beginning of his Olympic journey. After the Olympic Games, McClanahan was drafted into the NHL by the Buffalo Sabres, playing just under 5 years for Buffalo, Hartford Whalers and the New York Rangers. Once retired from hockey in 1985, he continued to build a successful career in Institutional Equity Sales Trading and executive leadership- working with major firms such as Morgan Stanley, Bear Stearns, Piper Jaffray and later ThinkEquity, where he rose to the role of Head of Trading. McClanahan has become known for applying the same discipline, preparation, and team-oriented mindset that defined his hockey career to his work in business, earning respect as a leader and mentor. During this time, he remained closely connected to hockey through coaching youth & high-school programs, where he emphasized accountability, work ethic, and competitive excellence. Today he is a popular motivational speaker, frequently drawing parallels between elite sport and business performance while sharing lessons on leadership, resilience, and teamwork inspired by his experiences both on and off the ice.
